Hoogerland.
By far the most sensible and relevant opinion on all of this business with the crash comes from Hoogerland himself:
“It might be a scandal but I don’t think they did it in purpose. Everything’s well taken care off over here but… you can be mad but I don’t think they did it in purpose,”
“I know that I’ll be in a lot of pain during the rest day. I hope I can recover. It’s a pity but I’m a Zeelander. We’re not easy to tear apart. I’m still alive. Wouter Weylandt wasn’t that lucky,” It’s easy to shake with rage and become piously indignant; vicariously, but that doesn’t change the fact that it was an accident. Obviously the driver was reckless, negligent and exercising really poor judgement—not that it is an excuse, more so an observation—but that doesn’t warrant callous and shallow threats against the driver either. If anything has come from this, it will hopefully be a fair bit more caution on the side of the support cars and media for the rest of this tour and likely for other sportive events.
